Why we have a spay/neuter contract

We get this question a lot when people find out we breed Jada and many express their opinion that we should not be breeding at all, we should instead be encouraging people to go to shelters to rescue a dog. While I agree rescuing is a great thing to do and we have, Kaja is our second Weimaraner rescue, there are specific reasons we breed.

First a little background. Jack was the first dog in our family from this line of Labrador Retrievers and was a wedding gift to my sister-in-law and her husband from his childhood friend Cooke. Jack was a fabulous dog, great hunter and great family dog that lived to the great old age of 15. My husbands parents received Jack's sister Bonnie two years later and Bonnie was also black. Our extended families have since welcomed Winston (third generation), Jada and Boog (4th generation) into the family. Winston is the only yellow for our family but there have been other yellow and chocolates in the litters. They have all been smart, good with the kids and good hunters, easy to train and long lived. Jada and Boog are from the same litter in which Jada was the only female. We had been waiting 5 long years for her and were beyond excited she was finally coming to us, however we didn't intend to breed. Until that is we found out the line would end with her if we didn't.

After much research and discussion we decided to have a litter and made sure we had people interested in the puppies before we went forward. We just could not let this steady, calm and well managed line die out. We spent hours looking for a stud we liked as well as a breeder we trusted to help us. We wanted to maintain the "Field breed" style of labs, not too stocky and not too lean but but with well shaped head and deep chests for good swimming.

It is because of the time and energy we put into maintaining the characteristics and temperament of the line as well AKC requirements that we don't allow breeding. We also don't want to contribute to the shelter over crowding with unwanted or unexpected puppies. Rescues work for many people but some families are looking for the comfort and dependability of a breeder that knows the background and history of the dogs that are going to be part of their families. Hunters are looking for dogs that are not gun shy and have a history of good retrieving in the field. We also have dogs that are being trained as therapy animals and that takes a special temperament to make these dogs shine. We also don't over breed, only having one litter every few years, so we rarely have puppies available.

Day 20 update - Sam & Ethan visit

My sisters children Sam and Ethan have been waiting to come see the puppies and play with them. They were so excited to get right in the box like they did last time and Betsy got some great photos.
Ethan

Ethan really liked the blue puppy

I'm not sure which puppy Sam has but I suspect it is the red one as it seemed to be her favorite.

Snuggle time

Time for some formula?!
We introduced the puppies to formula today but only one, black & blue, really figured out what to do with it. Most just licked our fingers or each other.

Update - Two weeks & 3 days

We are really getting our legs under us and climbing already. Grandfather (John) put the door on the box today because Kobe and Misty tried to climb out to get to Nana. She was sitting outside the box talking to Barb from next door who came to cuddle us, Barb loves puppy breath, :)

Nana took lots of photos and video today so get ready for some tail wagging, wobbly laughs!

Wobble, wag and woof!

Eating is a contact sport!

You sleep, I want to play!

Momma J sleeps like this.

Really, we put ourselves in the corner...

Day thirteen - learning to walk and see

Today is day thirteen, tomorrow we will be two weeks old! We started opening our eyes last night and they will continue to open over the next few days. We have also been pushing up on our legs and wobbling around. We are getting stronger each day and continue to gain weight. We also are getting quite loud looking for each other and Momma J when we get separated in the box.

Here is a link to a short video of us wobbling around and making lots of noise.

Update Day 12 - Monkey see, Monkey do

At almost two weeks old the puppies are really getting their legs under them and trying to walk. It is fun to watch them wobble around but in just a few days they will be pro's at it and then the fun starts.

Melissa, our oldest niece, came by to visit and she was the first one that Jada didn't growl at and let touch the babies. Jada was so excited to see her and probably wondered where her Ally was. Melissa had left Ally (New Year's eve litter, 18 months) and Winston (Jada's uncle, 8 years) home with Mom.

Blaze and Ryan were too cute laying beside each other today in exactly the same position.

Day seven update - A week old

We are a week old!
We are a week old today! We have all doubled our birth weight and got out first nail clipping today. We are trying to get up on our legs and moving around a lot. Momma J is feeling much better and spending lots of time with us now that her belly doesn't hurt so much.

Kaja supervising our nail clipping
Kaja supervised while Morgan cut our nails today, we didn't like it much.

It's amazing that in just a week Jada went from needing the fence around the box to being comfortable with Kaja and Mazi right up next to the box.

Day six update - An unexpected trip to the vet

After a long night of clean up and mopping the downstairs floor we ended up at the vet this morning. Our friend Sue was here and babysat the puppies while we were gone. Jada is being treated for an infection that is causing her to have severe gastro issues and not be very hungry. Hopefully the meds will kick in quickly and we can get back to normal.

On the bright side all the puppies continue to do fine, gaining weight, moving around and being totally cute. I could sit and watch them for hours. With the craziness of the past two days I have not gotten the last three puppies photos up. I will as soon as I can!

Proud Momma J
Check out the "mustache" Jada has developed on her upper lip. It is from licking the puppies constantly, she wore all the fur and pigment off it. Last time she ended up with a pink nose from rolling them, I wonder if she will get that this time around.

Day 5 - Update

The den
All weekend Jada kept going under the shed and digging under the ATV and cement mixer. I put a dark blanket over the back of the box, hanging it on the pen. She has been under the blanket all day. In the photo it looks like the blanket is behind her but it's actually above and in front of her. The blue ball was filled with frozen wet food and one of the ways we keep her calorie count up.

All the puppies continue to gain weight, we have a couple over a pound already. They are very mobile for creepers but want to mostly be together. They are also quite loud at times especially when Jada gets up quickly because the other dogs bark.

Male (Blue) "Hansen"

"Hansen"
Handsome Hansen was puppy number eight and was 10.5 oz. He is now 14.6 oz and doing great.

Male (green) "Jake"

"Jake"
"Jake" was puppy number seven and weighed in at 10 oz even! He is an active boy and really gets around the box. He didn't even want to stay still for his photo.

Male (red/white) "Aries"

"Aries"
"Aries" was puppy number six and is a real snuggler. He weighed in at 11.9 oz and this morning was 15.5 oz.

Male (black/white) "Kobe"

"Kobe"
"Kobe" was our first male born and was 12.3 oz, he is now over a pound at 1 lb 1.4 oz.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Male (orange/black) "Blaze"

"Blaze"
Blaze was the last male born and the smallest at 9.8 oz but he already is up to 13.4 oz and quite feisty. We call him Blaze because of the white "blaze" on his chest & orange was clearly his color!

Female (blue) "Hope"

"Hope"
Hope was the last puppy born and weighed in at 12.1 oz. She is mellow and oh so sweet, she reminds us of her half sister Gracie. This morning she weighed 15.3 oz.

Female (red) "Misty"

"Misty"
Misty was the second female born and the largest at 14.6 oz. She has a narrow white stripe on her chest. She was 1 lb 2.8 oz as of this morning.

Day three - Quick update

Just a quick update today as I am on my way out to my 30th high school reunion. John is on puppy duty today while Morgan and I am out. We had another good night, Jada didn't wake us at all and was not sick during the night. She ate regular food this morning and seems better.

All the puppies continue to gain weight and move around. We can already see personalities coming out. We are calling the girl with the red cord Misty as she is a big girl and reminds us of John's dog growing up. The little girl with the teal blue cord is laid back and mellow, we are calling her Hope as she reminds us of our Gracie. We are using names from Medal winners at this years Olympic games, they will all probably change as they find their forever families but we need to call them something.

Here are a few photos I took this morning with my phone.

Day two update

Today started early at 4:30 when I realized Jada had not been able to get our attention during the night and had been sick. After cleaning up the mess, thank goodness for vinyl floors, I looked up the BRAT diet for dogs and cooked her up some brown rice and hamburger.

I weighed all the puppies and they all are gaining well. They are moving around the pen and finding their mother to nurse without problem. Jada seems more comfortable this time around with laying down and not on the babies. She does not want Kaja or Mazi around and I put the exercise pen up around the box to give her a feeling of protection, bells on the pen let me know when she is trying to get out.

We put adjustable cord in different colors around the puppies necks to make identifying them easier.

Here is the puppy break down:

Order - sex - birth time - birth weight -  cord id color - color & markings
Puppy one - girl - 9:30 am - 12.8 oz - Pink/Black cord - black
Puppy two - girl - 10:40 am - 14.6 oz - Red cord - black w/ white stripe on chest
Puppy three- boy - 10:46 am - 12.3 oz Black/White cord - black
Puppy four - boy - 11:01 am - 12.5 oz - Black/Blue cord - black
Puppy five - girl - 11:10 am - 12.3 oz - Purple/Black cord - black
Puppy six - boy - 11:28 am - 11.9 oz - Red/White cord -  black
Puppy seven - boy - 11:58 am - 10.0 oz - Green cord - black
Puppy eight - boy - 12:42 pm - 10.5 oz - Blue cord - black
Puppy nine - boy - 1:00 pm - 9.8 oz - Black/Orange cord - black w/ white blaze on chest
Puppy ten - girl - 1:36 pm - 12.1 oz - Teal Blue cord - black

I hope to have individual pictures of each puppy up sometime on Sunday.

Awaiting the Olympic Litter

I will post updates as often as I can on the Olympic litter. They are due anytime and we are anxiously waiting to see if any are yellow this time.

Awaiting the Olympic Litter

Olympic Litter update - Aug 5

It's Sunday morning and we are all set up and ready for puppies. The whelping box sits empty and waiting as are all the supplies.

We had a second xray done on Friday August 3rd which showed 8 puppies and Jada is up to 70.4 lbs. I think she is hiding some like she did last time but only time will tell.
